Working with Local Government

The Heart Foundation has a long association with local governments in working with them to improve the health of the local community. Heartmoves, which is a group low-to-moderate intensity exercise program, is just one of a range of Heart Foundation programs which have been promoted and supported by local governments across Australia. See our case studies for some examples.

In July 2010, the Heart Foundation Heartmoves program was successful in receiving a federal grant worth around $1.1million over three years to work with local government in establishing Heartmoves programs across the country.

Provided as part of the Healthy Communities Initiative program, this initiative seeks to reduce levels of overweight and obesity by increasing community participation in physical activity and nutrition programs offered locally.

On the 20 November 2010,  the federal government announced that Round Two and Round Three funding would be made available to local government to support the implementation of local physical activity and nutrition programs. Successful applicants for Round Two funding were announced in June 2011 and a call for Round Three submissions will closed on the 19 August 2011.

Frequently asked questions about phase 3 of the Department's LGA grants are available on the Healthy Active site.
