A Centre's Success

Club Fitness (Nelson Bay RSL Club, NSW) in conjunction with the local health team, supported three exercise professionals to become accredited Heartmoves leaders.

The club expected 30-40 potential Heartmoves participants at their launch day, but instead the promotion attracted 230 people, most of whom are now regular patrons of the centre's Heartmoves classes.

This could be you!

Roma's story

In 2002 Roma started Heartmoves as a young 86 year-old after completing a respiratory rehabilitation program at her local hospital. She was a bit nervous at first, but thought the class was "great fun, the people were very welcoming and the leader really looked after me". Roma now comes to Heartmoves at least four times a week.

Roma is her GP's "star pupil" - her fitness has improved remarkably, she is sleeping better, she is stronger and her balance has greatly improved. She also says her social life has improved and that she can go out with her family more often. One huge step for Roma was re-obtaining her full Driver's Licence after it was suggested she reduce it to a restricted licence due to lack of confidence and illness.
Roma's daughter Judy had at first just intended to help her mum get to the classes, but she liked Heartmoves so much that she joined herself. Roma and Judy both star in the Heartmoves home-based DVD.

Margaret's story

"I have problems with my breathing as I am a chronic asthmatic, but after starting Heartmoves I feel I can cope. I am now enjoying life and feeling fit too, but best of all I have not been to hospital for four years."

Noel's story

"My heart specialist gave me my life. Heartmoves gave me power; the power to confidently exert myself without fear, to play, dance, work, to live."

Patricia's story

"Heartmoves is fantastic - great instructors - friendly atmosphere. What more could you ask for? My husband Keith had a big operation four years ago. He spent five weeks in a coma and was home after seven weeks. He was advised to continue Heartmoves at Wests Fitness. I attend with him and it was the best move ever. Congratulations to Heartmoves!"

Joan's story

"Heartmoves was introduced just after I had my open heart surgery. After initially not being capable of doing more than five minutes at a time, I can now enjoy the full 45 minutes of fun. The girls instructing are fantastic and the companionship of fellow participants is wonderful and beneficial to all."

Cilka's story

"Four and a half years ago I was a different person to who I am today. I came to the realisation that as a newly widowed person I would have to make changes in my life. I was depressed, physically unhealthy and lacked the confidence to meet new people and expand my social horizons. That was until I signed up for Heartmoves. Through the regular program I became physically fit which improved my emotional state and I looked forward to the classes each week. Here I have met the most wonderful people, those I could call my "new" friends. The instructors were helpful and made me believe I could achieve my goals. Through their support I grew stronger, improved my self esteem and became a more motivated, outgoing and confident person. So when the question is posed, how has Heartmoves changed my life, the answer is simple, in all that is important to me and my health. This is my story."
